Is it ya Office?
Following instructions without a memo can be the dumbest thing you can ever do working in a private establishment. Even where you have one circulated you have to get confirmation from two or three people who will serve as your 'silent' witness when you are faced with the question who said? Silent because the boss always makes sure s/he has the final say, at least they'll 'nod' in agreement with you when the tongue lashing heat is turned on. God forbid you have a different opinion, for you'll air it fully dozing in bed jobless.
It doesn’t matter what management level or position you are in you remain a subordinate awaiting permission from the owner of the organisation or company before making any decision. And if you think you are smart and decide to use your initiative after been told the umpteenth time to do so ‘when I am not there’ then you run the risk of finding out if it’s ‘ya office’. You are watched closely from that day onwards because you have the tendency of been disloyal and taking over another person’s sweat, business and ‘hard earned’ investment.
Family members walk in and out of the office as they please expecting to be treated the same way as the boss. The receptionist and secretary to the boss have a hard time convincing them ‘oga’ is in a meeting. That jinx is broken when it comes to them, it never works with relatives as they tell you, “I just spoke with her/im at the gate and s/he told me to come”. The petty cash reads red when they leave and the accountant is left with the grievous task of finding what column to enter the ‘unmentioned’ expenses under the office expenditures.
The rules change with the circumstance, one minute you are allowed to do one thing the next you are queried for doing same. There is no standard lunch hour, closing time, official holiday or annual leave. The boss decides everything! Don’t ever fall sick, you can’t afford that luxury. Your salary is your salary period, and you are not entitled to any allowance or fringe benefits, but you must be taxed. The women already know where they stand so they must not get pregnant. Where they do, the date of delivery must coincide with the start date of maternity leave or no work no pay.
When you cease to be productive by the boss standard you are rumpled and thrown away like a piece of paper, you are not indispensable and millions are waiting to take your place.
Working in a private company is the worst form of employment and whoever invented private business must really hate workers, but ‘how man for do’!
