After Valentine Day

So Valentine has gone as fast as it came and all that’s left is another opportunity to count the cost. The spendings, beauty touch ups, romance all gone with it. It is no longer news that the day is now officially known for its celebration of relationships, loved ones, love and lust all together. Yes forget that entire tale about St Valentine and martyrdom it has evolved beyond that.
The day now goes with a lot of vice, lies, disappointments, heartbreaks and the mind blowing confirmation of illicit affairs. Don’t ask me how but valentine day is often the avenue for that. The business man suddenly travels on a business trip, the banker would need to balance the account over night, the student must write and submit an essay that day, the doctor? an emergency and madam has to assist a girl friend urgently.

In this frenzy the teenagers are left the worst for it and the effect on them could be life threatening. While the older ones concentrate on finding out how much their partners love them by the expressions and quality of gifts shared or not, the adolescents are carried away by the emotions shown. At this age everything glitters, the more daring the most exciting. The uncontrollable urge to experiment with everything pulls this group of individuals into acts of regret. Most sexual decisions are taken on this day leaving the world with 11% births and 23% unsafe abortions.

As parents, guardians and confidants to this generation it is our duty to listen, communicate and provide the right information without being judgmental. Believe me that’s the only way to help them else they wall you off. Including the word “family” in the celebration would curtail a lot of “nocturnal” activities that bring us grief. By involving them in the planning and activities for the day the true meaning of love and the responsibilities that go with it is passed across subtly. The next Valentine is exactly 364 days near, start planning it could make a difference.
